Although most of the duck species do also breed here, numbers are always highest in winter when birds that breed in Siberia and Scandinavia join them on the Scrape, so numbers of wigeon, teal and pintail have declined noticeably in the last couple of weeks. As the breeding season gets underway we will begin to see a lot less of certain species. Minsmere holds a sizeable proportion of the UK population of bitterns. Wildlife is responding to the slightly milder (and thankfully dry) weather. Sightings. E.g. Waders included whimbrels, green sandpipers, greenshanks and bar-tailed godwits as well as the more predictable avocets and black-tailed godwits, while Mediterranean gulls reached a new high of 14.
